8.3. GIS Book: Clip

The Clip tool allows you to trim part of an entity based on the perimeter of a polygonal layer (Figure 35). The polygonal layer is used to limit the extent of the layers to a specific area. For example, if you have a layer of contour lines at country level, you can make a clipping to work at province level. The tool is located at the following address:

ArcToolbox > Analysis Tools > Extract > Clip

To configure the tool, proceed as follows (Figure 34):

  • Input Features: Select the layer of points, lines or polygons to be trimmed.
  • Clip Features: Select the polygonal layer containing the trimming perimeter.
  • Output Features Class: Select the directory or geodatabase where the new cropped layer will be saved.
  • XY Tolerance: This is an optional tolerance parameter that establishes the distance that a coordinate can be moved in both X and Y.
