8.5. GIS Book: Dissolve

This tool unifies geographic information on the basis of an attribute; in other words, it merges information that shares an identical value within the attribute table. Figure 37 shows that all polygons containing a common attribute are merged. For example, this tool is used when a layer of districts is required to obtain a layer of regions. However, in this case the table associated with the districts must have a field indicating the region to which each district belongs. To open the Dissolve tool, go to:

ArcToolbox > Data Management Tools > Generalization > Dissolve

In the pop-up window of the Dissolve tool you must configure the parameters as follows:

  • Input Features: Select the layer of points, lines or polygons on which to work.
  • Output Features Class: Select the directory or geodatabase where the resulting file will be stored.
  • Dissolve Field:  Select the field containing the attributes according to which the entities will merge.

Statistics Field: This allows statistical calculations of the fields to be dissolved.
