A “Feature Dataset” in ArcGIS Pro functions similarly to folders or directories in Windows Explorer. It serves as an organizational container for feature classes that share the same spatial coordinate system. By grouping feature classes with similar geometric properties, this structure allows for easier management and integrated analysis.
To create a “Feature Dataset”, navigate to the desired geodatabase, right-click on it, and select New > Feature Dataset. During the creation process, a name must be assigned, and the appropriate coordinate system selected.
In this exercise, the following “Feature Datasets” should be created:
- A_HUMAN_CONCENTRATION
- B_HYDROGRAPHY
- C_ROAD_AXIS
- D_RELIEF
This organizational method helps maintain structure and improves the workflow, especially when managing large geospatial projects or complex data relationships.

Is it Better to Use Layers as Shapefiles or in a Geodatabase?
Geodatabases offer enhanced organization, integrated tools, and support for advanced functionalities such as topology, subtypes, and domains. In contrast, Shapefiles are widely compatible and easy to share across different platforms. Choosing between them depends on the specific project requirements and the level of complexity involved.
