Editing a Vector Layer (Shapefiles) in ArcGIS Pro

To initiate the editing of a vector layer in ArcGIS Pro, begin by selecting the relevant layer from the “Contents” panel. Then, under the “Edit” tab, locate the “Features” tool group, where the options “Create”, “Modify”, and “Delete” are available. These tools allow the user to create new entities, adjust existing ones, or remove elements within the selected layer.

It is essential to ensure the layer is editable before performing any operations. After selecting the target layer, return to the “Edit” tab and activate the appropriate function, whether “Create”, “Modify”, or “Delete”.

Next, in the “Create Features” panel under the “Templates” tab, select the vector layer to be edited. Once this step is completed, the user can proceed to digitize elements by positioning the cursor on the georeferenced image and drawing the required shapes, such as lines or polygons.

To finalize the editing session, use the commands found in “Edit > Manage Edits”. Select “Save” to preserve the changes or “Discard” to cancel them. It is strongly recommended to save changes frequently to avoid data loss in the event of unexpected program interruptions or system failures. The user must also verify that the correct layer is active before saving edits.

As a good practice, especially prior to extensive modifications, it is advisable to create a backup of all relevant data files to prevent unintentional data loss or corruption.
