Editing Points in ArcGIS Pro

To begin the digitization of point features, the user must first select the appropriate layer, such as “buildings”, in the “Contents” panel. Then, navigate to the “Edit” tab and click on “Create” to open the “Create Features” panel.

In the “Templates” panel, ensure the point layer is active. Select the “Point” symbol to initiate the creation of new point features. Position the cursor over the desired location, such as the center of a building, and click to place the point. Repeat this process for each feature that needs to be represented.

For increased accuracy, it is advisable to use the zoom and pan tools to better control the positioning of points, particularly when working with small or densely packed objects. The arrow keys on the keyboard can also assist in achieving finer movements during the placement process.

To preserve progress, users should regularly save edits. This is done by selecting “Save” under the “Edit” tab in the “Manage Edits” group, which records all modifications made to the layer.

Inserting Points Using XY Coordinates

Points can also be added by entering specific XY coordinates. Begin by selecting the relevant point layer in the “Create Features > Templates” panel, such as “control_points”. Then click on the “Point” symbol.

Right-click anywhere on the map and select the “Absolute X,Y,Z” option, or press the “F6” key. A window will appear where the user can input the desired XY values. For example, X = 691263 and Y = 9532775 may be used for point P1, while X = 692075 and Y = 9532387 may be used for point P2. After entering the values, press “Enter” to confirm the creation of the point.

Manually insert points by means of specific coordinates

This method supports various coordinate formats, including meters, decimal degrees, MGRS, and UTM. To change the input format, open the “Absolute X,Y” window, then click on the drop-down icon to select the preferred format. For instance, in the UTM format, a coordinate entry may look like: 17M 691507 9532881.

Each time a new coordinate is entered, pressing “Enter” will add the corresponding point. Once all desired points have been added, use the “Save” option found under “Edit > Manage Edits” to save the edits.

Modifying the Location of a Point

To adjust the position of an existing point, select the relevant layer, such as “buildings”, and go to the “Edit” tab. In the “Tools” group, choose the “Move” tool.

Click on the point to be modified; it will be highlighted in yellow. Drag the point to the new desired location. Alternatively, the point can be deleted by pressing the “Delete” key on the keyboard.

After repositioning the point, click the arrow in the upper-left section of the “Modify Features” panel to activate the “Save” option and preserve the changes.

When working with multiple layers, such as lines and polygons, it is advisable to deactivate those not being edited. This helps prevent confusion and simplifies the editing process by reducing visual clutter on the map.
