Editing Vector Layers (Shapefiles) in ArcGIS Pro

To begin editing a vector layer in ArcGIS Pro, the desired layer must first be selected in the “Contents” panel. This action ensures that the software applies subsequent editing operations to the correct dataset.

Next, under the “Edit” tab in the ribbon, locate the “Features” group. Within this group, the user will find the commands “Create”, “Modify”, and “Delete”, which are used to generate new features, edit existing ones, or remove elements from the vector layer.

It is essential to confirm that the layer is enabled for editing. Once confirmed, proceed by selecting the appropriate editing function based on the required task.

After choosing an editing function, open the “Create Features” panel. Within the “Templates” section of this panel, select the relevant layer template. This step allows the user to initiate the creation of new features.

To digitize features, position the cursor over the georeferenced image and begin drawing the necessary geometry, such as points, lines, or polygons, according to the template selected.

Once the desired changes are made, it is important to save the edits to retain the modifications. This can be done from the “Edit” tab, within the “Manage Edits” group, by selecting the “Save” option.

If the edits are not satisfactory, the “Discard” option can be used to cancel the changes made during the editing session. This provides flexibility in case of mistakes or if a different approach is needed.

It is strongly recommended to save edits regularly during a session. Doing so helps avoid data loss due to unexpected software or system failures.

Before saving, users should confirm that the correct layer is selected and active. Additionally, creating a backup of the geodatabase or shapefiles before extensive edits is considered a best practice to prevent unintentional data loss.

ArcGIS Pro allows navigation to specific locations using coordinates. To do this, the user should access the “Map” tab and, within the “Navigate” group, select the “Go to XY” command.

This tool enables entering geographic coordinates in various formats, such as decimal degrees or degrees-minutes-seconds. Upon entering the desired coordinates, the map will center on the corresponding location.

This function is particularly useful for verifying the position of features, ensuring spatial accuracy, or locating a known site for editing or analysis.
