First Steps in ArcGIS Pro

ArcGIS Pro, developed by ESRI, is a desktop application designed for 64-bit computers. It enables spatial operations and analysis, producing digital or printed maps in 2D and 3D formats.

This software consolidates the capabilities of ArcMap, ArcCatalog, and ArcScene into a single application. It can be summarized as:

ArcGIS Pro = ArcMap + ArcCatalog + ArcScene

It is recommended to use the English version of ArcGIS Pro for consistency with this guide.

Projects in ArcGIS Pro are saved as “.aprx” files. Each new project automatically creates its own geodatabase (“.gdb”) and toolbox (“.tbx”).

Creating a New Project

An internet connection is required on first use to validate user credentials, typically through an ArcGIS Online account.

The ArcGIS Pro start screen includes the following options:

  • New Project: Start new projects using predefined templates. The “Map” template is commonly used.
  • Recent Projects: Quickly access previously saved projects and mark favorites.
  • Open Another Project: Locate projects not listed among recent ones.
  • Recent Templates: Reuse recently used templates.
  • Start with Another Template: Browse additional available templates.
  • Learning Resources: Access tutorials, documentation, and training courses.
  • Settings: Adjust application preferences and licensing options.

When creating a new project using “Map”, users enter a project name and select a save location.

Choosing “Start without a template” opens a blank workspace for manually setting up the project environment and loading data layers.

Setting Units

To configure measurement units for the project:

  • Navigate to: Project > Options > Units
  • Select metric units for distance, area, angles, location, and direction

Creating a New Map

To add a new map, go to the Insert tab and select New Map. Users can also create scenes, stereo maps, and basemaps as needed.

In older versions (before 3.2), a map may need to be created manually after project creation.

By default, a topographic basemap is displayed. To start with a blank map:

  • Go to: Project > Options > Application > Map and Scene
  • Under Basemap, choose None

The Ribbon and Panels

The interface is composed of a ribbon and docked panels:

  • Ribbon: Organized into tabs (e.g., Map) and groups like Clipboard, Navigate, Layer, Selection, and Inquiry. Contains commonly used tools such as zoom, selection, layer management, and measuring tools.
  • Panels: Dockable windows that manage layers and tools. By default, the “Contents” and “Geoprocessing” panels are open.

To reposition a panel, drag its title bar. When a blue highlight appears, drop it to anchor the panel in the desired location.
