A geodatabase is a centralized storage system used to organize, manage, and maintain geospatial data within ArcGIS Pro. Unlike traditional shapefiles, geodatabases offer enhanced capabilities, allowing for the integration, querying, and analysis of geographic information in a structured and efficient format.
Creating a Geodatabase
When a new project is created in ArcGIS Pro, a default geodatabase is automatically generated and linked to that project. This default geodatabase is used to store data outputs and other spatial content associated with the project.
To verify the current geodatabase or create a new one, begin by opening the Catalog View. Navigate to the View tab, then select Windows > Catalog View. A new “Catalog” tab will appear alongside “Maps” and “Layouts”.
In the Contents panel within the Catalog, expand the Databases section or browse to the desired location on your computer where the new geodatabase will be stored. Right-click on the folder or location, choose New File Geodatabase, and assign a name, for example, “City”. Then click Save.
The newly created geodatabase will appear in the chosen directory and can now be used to store and manage spatial datasets. This includes feature classes, raster datasets, tables, and other elements that are essential for geospatial analysis and mapping within ArcGIS Pro.
